For downtown residents, our public spaces are precious to us. Our community centres and parks are our backyards, our gathering spaces. Places to meet each other, to learn a new skill or sport, and to connect.
I know the incredible demand in this growing community for high quality recreation, public space and parks. It’s why I’m so proud to be part of this unprecedented partnership between the City of Toronto the Toronto Tempo – which represents the first WNBA facility in North America to include dedicated community access and programming.
This new facility is a game-changer for residents of the Fort York community and Toronto’s waterfront neighbourhoods. Neighbours will be able to access outdoor courts and a mini-pitch, public washrooms, and new park space.
It’s all part of our continued work to connect our communities to the waterfront, creating a park pathway all the way from Adelaide St W to Lake Ontario. We’ve also secured historic community access to a world-class training facility - including gym, training spaces, and multipurpose rooms.
An agreement like this means that residents of all ages will have more opportunities to connect, participate in sports, and stay active, all year round and especially in those cold winter months.
It means that Toronto sets an example for championing women and girls in sports
Together, we are creating a space that will serve this community for years to come and inspire the next generation. This is coming for Council approval in July 2027.
