The King Street priority was designed to be a model for efficient transit. It's one of our busiest routes, and when it works well, it keeps our city moving.
Last fall, we hit a rough patch. Lack of enforcement and maintenance slowed things down, and the frustration was clear. It wasn't living up to the vibrant street we had envisioned. Together, we worked to make immediate changes, including:
- installing 180 road tactile mats for better accessibility and flow
- adding 15 new Traffic Agents to ensure traffic flow
- creating plans for new raised transit platforms
- bringing King Street into the CafeTO program to ensure the latest accessibility rules are followed.
In the Spring 2024 King Street Update at Council, we heard about the success these changes have made. King Street is flowing again, but there is more work to do. I put forward a successful motion to create a working group to tackle these issues head on, creating a street that will continue to thrive in our ever changing downtown core. We will also hear back from staff in the fall on some of the important changes, such as the signal improvements that have just been installed on the street, and our ability to enforce those who block intersections.
To get King Street working in the best way, we know it needs consistent improvements. My commitment is to work with you to make that happen. And I want to hear from you.
