Starting September 3, 2024, the TTC will be conducting overhead wire upgrades and underground work between Union Station and Exhibition Place on Queens Quay West and Fleet Street. This work is expected to take until January 2025 and will be completed in phases to restore streetcar service as soon as possible. Bus service will replace the 509 Harbourfront streetcar for periods in this area.
This work is part of a city-wide state of good repair program that’s completing necessary maintenance and improvements on all of our streetcar lines. It'll also modernize the streetcar power network and enhance reliability of service along the waterfront.
The 509 Harbourfront is used every day by residents and visitors and provides some critical connections across our waterfront and to Exhibition Place. My office and I have been, and will continue, advocating to the TTC to ensure people are informed about this work and explore creative and innovative ways that ensure transit is able to keep moving on, learning the lessons from earlier this summer on Spadina.
Construction Schedule
From September 3 to October 2024, work will be prioritized between Union Station and Spadina Avenue to return partial 509 streetcar service between Union station and Spadina by early October.
Afterwards, work will be focused between Spadina Avenue and Bathurst Street to return partial 509 streetcar service between Union Station and Bathurst by early November.
From late November to January, work will take place on Fleet Street west of Bathurst Street to Strachan Avenue.
509 Harbourfront Service During Construction
During the first phase from September 3 to early October, buses will replace streetcars along the entire 509 Harbourfront route.
- Eastbound buses will run in the TTC streetcar corridor between Spadina and Union Station and on the
- Westbound buses will run on the street and service curbside stops.
Information on service during the next phase will be provided before the work begins.
As part of the plan, Harbourfront area streetcars will be restored for Taylor Swift concert dates in November, with increased service on multiple routes to accommodate an influx of visitors to Toronto.
I have asked the TTC to prioritize making people aware of this project and the changes to service during all phases.
In the immediate, this includes:
- A dedicated project website
- Briefings for neighbourhood associations and other stakeholder groups
- TTC staff canvassing 509 Corridor with notices as of August 23, 2024
- Notices posted at 509 Harbourfront streetcar stops as of August 23, 2024
- Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) at Union Station and Queens Quay/Spadina as of September 1, 2024
- Postcards for distribution by CSRs
