Assessing the Housing and Transportation Impacts of an Expanded Island Airport

What we know about the potential impacts on housing and traffic of Island Airport expansion based on any publicly available information.

Last week, City staff reported to the Planning and Housing Committee about the potential impacts on housing and traffic of Island Airport expansion based on any publicly available information.

The City report highlights a number of areas that are of concern to me and many Torontonians, particularly:

  • Less housing on the waterfront and in southern Etobicoke and impacts to livability of housing in these areas, to account for more pollution and noise

  • Serious impacts on congestion on Bathurst St, Queen’s Quay and Lake Shore Blvd

  • Less park spaces available for public use, like Little Norway Park and the Toronto Island Park, in our downtown communities

  • The air and water quality and harbour use impacting local ecosystems, residents, and visitors

I moved motions with the Committee Chair for more information on the implications of foreign ownership of major transportation infrastructure (by American investment company JP Morgan) and the impacts on water quality in the Inner Harbour.

Decisions about the future of the Island Airport must be part of a transparent, democratic, and evidence-based process. Torontonians deserve to have a say.
