Improving Access to Toronto Island

I love Toronto Island Park. With over 1.5 million visitors a year, from near and far, I know this is a shared experience. Improving access to Toronto Island in all seasons is my priority.

I love Toronto Island Park. With over 1.5 million visitors a year, from near and far, I know this is a shared experience.

Improving access to Toronto Island in all seasons is my priority.

That’s why I’ve been working to expedite new and larger ferries and get them in service as soon as possible, moving forward our extensive Toronto Island Park Master Plan that includes improvements at the ferry terminal and to wayfinding on the Island, and implementing the Marine Strategy to make transportation to the Island better from all points of the harbour. Over the coming weeks, you’ll hear a lot more from me on these items.

Today, I also worked with my fellow city councillors and City staff to move a motion to:

  • Conduct a thorough review of all ways to improve access to Toronto Island, including looking at a pedestrian and cycling fixed link. This requires a comprehensive approach.
  • Engage with the many stakeholders around the harbour. There are complex jurisdictions - environmental, land ownership, economic and community - that need to be taken into account for meaningful review.
  • Receive a report back in the first quarter of 2025 that explores improvements to access, while procurement of desperately needed new faster and larger ferries proceeds. This enables us to meet our legislative requirements and enhance access in the short and medium-term and plan for expansive long-term access.

I’ll keep working with all of you to ensure our Toronto Island Park can be enjoyed by all, year-round.

Protecting Arts, Culture, and Community Space at Youngplace

We’ve protected vital arts, culture and community space at Youngplace! Working together, we helped 5 organizations purchase their units that were put at risk by the Artscape receivership process and completed the first acquisition by a cultural land trust in Canada for 2 units, through partnership between Inspirit Foundation and the Community & Cultural Spaces Trust. I was proud to move over $1.2 million dollars of local Section 37 money to contribute to these purchases.
