Improving Access to Toronto Island
I love Toronto Island Park. With over 1.5 million visitors a year, from near and far, I know this is a shared experience.
Improving access to Toronto Island and better connection while there, in all seasons, is my priority.
That’s why I’ve been working to expedite new and larger ferries and get them in service as soon as possible, moving forward our extensive Toronto Island Park Master Plan that includes improvements at the ferry terminal and for wayfinding on the Island, and implementing the Marine Strategy to make transportation to the Island better from all points of the harbour.
I also worked with my fellow City Councillors and City staff to have staff conduct a thorough review of all ways to improve access to Toronto Island.
City Council has approved a Task Force on Toronto Island Access and Harbour Transportation to focus expertise from City staff along with Waterfront Toronto on short, medium and long term plans for better access, including a close look at active transportation fixed link options. This framework will make ongoing improvements to Island access a priority.
In the meantime, we moved forward immediate Island access improvements in the 2025 summer season:
- Bike Share on the Island for the first time
- More water taxis and accessible docks
- Jack Layton Ferry Terminal enhancements with shade structures, furniture, public art
- Reducing crowding at the JLFT and Ferry landings
- New accessible waiting area at JLFT
- Freezing Ferry ticket fees
- Keeping new higher capacity ferries on track
- Advancing an east-west water shuttle harbour connection pilot project
I’ll keep working with all of you to ensure our Toronto Island Park can be enjoyed by all, year-round.
You can find more information on these projects on the City’s webpage.
