New park-in-progress opens at 34 Hanna Street in Liberty Village
Today marks an exciting milestone for Liberty Village as we celebrate the opening of the new Park in Progress at 34 Hanna Street—a space that offers residents a new place to gather, relax, and connect while work continues toward the creation of a permanent neighbourhood park.
Thank you to the Liberty Village BIA for their partnership in bringing this project to life and to the Liberty Village Residents' Association for their ongoing advocacy and support of community initiatives throughout the neighbourhood.
Every Torontonian deserves the opportunity to thrive. That means access to affordable housing, beautiful and well-maintained parks, reliable public transit, safe streets, excellent public services, child care, mental health supports, good jobs, and vibrant arts and cultural programming. Public spaces are an essential part of building healthy, connected communities.
Liberty Village has one of the largest parkland deficits in Toronto, and creating more accessible green space has long been a priority for our community.
This space represents an important first step. Following the FIFA World Cup, the entire parking lot will be transformed into a permanent public park. Planning is already underway, informed by community feedback gathered through last year's public survey and the work of a Community Advisory Committee selected through a random lottery process. A public design competition will also help shape the vision for this important new neighbourhood park.
As people begin using this Park in Progress, we welcome your feedback on how we can continue making it an even better place for everyone.
This project also reflects a broader commitment at City Hall to make better use of public land. We are working to transform underused City-owned spaces into the parks, affordable housing, and public amenities our growing communities need.
Liberty Village is an incredible neighbourhood, and I look forward to continuing to work alongside residents, businesses, and community organizations to improve it. Throughout the summer, my team and I will be out in the community sharing information about Liberty for All, City Planning's study that will help shape the neighbourhood's future. We'll also continue advocating for the infrastructure, transportation improvements, construction management, and public space investments our community deserves.
