This furthers the importance of the reports to come forward later this quarter on improved management of the ferry system, and improving access to Toronto Island by all viable means, which remains my priority, to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for residents and visitors.

Dear Paul Johnson,

The City of Toronto's Ferry Service to Toronto Island is a vital transportation connection with over 1.4 million trips each year. Confidence in safe and accessible ferry operations is of critical importance to me.

The reporting on an April 30, 2024 incident involving the Thomas Rennie ferry has raised serious concerns. I am writing to ensure that any additional events have been appropriately reported, that proper oversight and protocols are being followed, and clear and timely communications around serious incidents are well implemented.

The details of this incident furthers the importance of the report (EX17.3 Electric Ferries Shoreline Infrastructure Work Plan) coming forward later this quarter to review the organizational structure for operations, management and asset planning for the City’s ferries and docks, and I will be looking for the recommendations that address these key issues without delay. This is in addition to Council direction (MM19.18 Ensuring Access for All Toronto Residents to Toronto Island) for a report back on improving access to Toronto Island by all viable means, which remains my priority, to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for residents and visitors.

Sincerely,

Ausma Malik
Deputy Mayor and City Councillor - Spadina-Fort York, Ward 10
