I’ve heard from many of you about the construction on Adelaide Street, and I share your concerns about the safety and accessibility of the street while work is happening. I am pleased to share a few updates as I continue to work with city staff for better in the circumstances.
Show Your Love for Toronto
Today we opened Love Park, a beautiful new green and public space at York St and Queens Quay West which transformed an old off-ramp into the literal heart of our waterfront! It's an inspiration for this city I know we love, and the ways we show it. Here's three ways that we have coming up.
Restoring Ecology and Preserving History at Hanlan's Point Beach
Councillor Ausma Malik (Ward 10, Spadina-Fort York) introduced a motion on June 15, 2023, seconded by Jennifer McKelvie (Deputy Mayor), to pass critical measures to restore ecology and preserve the history and culture of Hanlan's Point Beach.
Have your Voice Heard - for Mayor and on Ontario Place!
I was glad to vote yesterday at Canoe Landing Community Recreation Centre in the Mayoral By-Election. There is just one ballot, so you can vote in any advance poll location across the city! Your vote is your voice for the city we want. I am also working to ensure community voices are heard as part of a robust and transparent public engagement process for the development application at Ontario Place.
Ward 10 opens its doors (and summer rec programs)!
After a long weekend of warm weather and a lot of compost being distributed for backyard and patio gardening, it is clear that summer is right around the corner. This means it is time to register for the City’s summer recreation programs! It's also the return of Doors Open Toronto. There are lots of great offerings for both right here in Ward 10.
Welcome summer!
It’s been feeling a lot like summer! Graduations are around the corner and we’re excited about big events of the season coming up. This Sunday, May 14 is my first Environment Day from 10:00 to 2:00 pm at David Crombie Park, 131 The Esplanade (between Frederick Street and Lower Sherbourne Street)!
80 Years of Queer History at Hanlan's Point Beach
Councillor Ausma Malik (Ward 10, Spadina-Fort York) introduced a motion on May 11, 2023, seconded by Chris Moise (Ward 13, Toronto Centre), to recognize Hanlan's Point as a Historically Queer Space and ensure the City engages Toronto's queer community in Toronto Island Park planning.
Our community blossoms
Last week we took another important step forward in our work to protect the future of Ontario Place. The General Government Committee adopted my motion to defer consideration of a land transfer being demanded by the Ford government until City Council makes a decision on the development application for Ontario Place.
Press Release: Councillor Ausma Malik Welcomes Decision to Defer City Land Exchange at Ontario Place
Councillor Ausma Malik (Ward 10, Spadina-Fort York) welcomed the decision of General Government Committee to adopt her recommended motion to defer consideration of a land transfer being demanded by the Ford government until City Council makes a decision on the development application for Ontario Place.
Press Release: Councillor Malik and Ontario Place For All Highlight Critical Staff Report on Ontario Place Redevelopment
Councillor Ausma Malik (Ward 10, Spadina–Fort York) along with representatives of Ontario Place for All called attention to the strongly critical staff report on the Ontario Place development application being considered today at Toronto East York Community Council (TEYCC).
Your voice matters in Ontario Place’s future
We’ve got to get the future of Ontario Place right. And the current development application raises a lot of serious concerns.
Spring brings new opportunities
It was a great disappointment but unfortunately no surprise that yesterday's provincial budget contained no significant support for Toronto. Our city deserves better. And we will continue to fight for it.
Moving forward together
While there are changes ahead in the Mayor's office over the next few months, our work serving our communities in Spadina–Fort York continues as determined as ever.
Statement by Councillors Malik and Moise on the 501 Queen St. Metrolinx Diversion
Our downtown communities deserve reliable public transit. Recently, it was reported that the TTC’s 501 Queen St streetcar would be replaced by shuttle buses for 20 months due to disruptions created by the planned Ontario Line construction work by Metrolinx. Our offices have been working jointly with City staff to minimize disruptions to service.
Statement on the creation of the Ontario Line Sub-committee
Today at Toronto and East York Community Council I, along with Chris Moise and Paula Fletcher, established a new Ontario Line Sub-committee with unanimous support from our Council colleagues.
TTC Safety Message
Like you, I'm one of 1.7 million people who use TTC every day. Riders and workers can, and should, be safe moving across our City.
From what we're seeing and hearing, it hasn't felt that way lately. Violence prevention is urgently needed. More crisis response workers, 24/7 drop-in spaces, and better transit service are proven investments in our safety, unlike an increase of policing.
