Summer is in full swing. Make sure you are staying cool through the heat by learning about Toronto’s Heat Relief Strategy and catching shade in some of our City’s parks and public spaces.
The school year is wrapping up and I have many graduations and fun fairs in my calendar over the next week. I’m looking forward to celebrating with you all! And, this week at Executive Committee, we approved expanding a universal school food program across Toronto.
June is here and there is lots to celebrate - the good weather and communities across the city.
There are many ways to get around Toronto and I’m working hard to improve your options for getting around.
Toronto is feeling busy with some of our big markers of spring coming back. All this good weather means that construction season is underway, but we are seeing the important work we’ve done at the City to better coordinate construction and speed up projects pay off.Just this week, construction at Bathurst St and Lake Shore Blvd wrapped up two months ahead of schedule.
As the sun stays out longer and the temperature (finally!) rises, I’m excited to share a few ways to enjoy our parks this spring. This weekend, we have our first Community Environment Day on Sunday, April 27, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Stanley Park South (700 Wellington St). Two neighbours are joining us to run workshops!
Better weather is around the corner, we hope! For a lot of us, that means spring cleaning and decluttering. I'm happy to share that my first Community Environment Day of the year is coming up. Join us on Sunday, April 27th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Stanley Park South (700 Wellington St).
Early on Wednesday April 2, Toronto Fire Services responded to a fire at Canoe Landing Park, and unfortunately, the beloved public sculpture – the red canoe – by Canadian artist Douglas Coupland, called Tom Thomson’s Canoe, was destroyed by a fire. Share your favourite memories of it with me and commit to it's legacy.
There are glimmers of a new season as we spring forward with a number of exciting projects and activities to improve and connect our neighbourhoods, and continue to support local and Canadian. From getting transit moving, shaping the future of our community, to our annual environmental initiatives, here are just some of the exciting happenings to mark your calendar...
Now is a time for us to work together in our communities, support our local businesses, and buy Canadian made, as the implementation of tariffs continue to raise concerns about what it means for our city.
Tomorrow is provincial election day and there's a lot at stake for Toronto and our Spadina-Fort York communities in this election. Find your local polling station here and then make a plan to get out and vote! There is a lot to celebrate over the next few weeks. Black History Month is coming to a close and there are still many events in Spadina-Fort York to check out as part of the celebrations - read on to see what is on. International Women’s Day is March 8, with its annual march weaving through the streets.
We’ve protected vital arts, culture and community space at Youngplace! Working together, we helped 5 organizations purchase their units that were put at risk by the Artscape receivership process and completed the first acquisition by a cultural land trust in Canada for 2 units, through partnership between Inspirit Foundation and the Community & Cultural Spaces Trust. I was proud to move over $1.2 million dollars of local Section 37 money to contribute to these purchases.
Confidence in safe and accessible ferry operations is of critical importance to me. The reporting on an April 30, 2024 incident involving the Thomas Rennie ferry has raised serious concerns, and I have written to the City Manager to ensure proper actions are being taken.
As we dig out our roads and sidewalks from the snowstorm, and prepare for more this weekend, I hope you’re staying safe and well-prepared. The TDSB and TCDSB called it a snow day, and closed their buildings for recreational programming. Our city’s libraries and community centres have largely remained open, though programs have been changed or cancelled accordingly. If you do have to get out and about, the TTC is running, with accommodation for weather related delays or route changes. The City is encouraging residents to avoid the roads if possible as they work to clear the roads. You can visit toronto.ca/PlowTO to see our cleaning vehicles in real-time and get the latest. Our City’s warming centres are open and available – you can find them here.
We are in the last stretch of the 2025 City Budget process. Big thanks to everyone that came out to our Budget Town Hall sharing your thoughts on the proposed budget, and what should be prioritized as we move forward. Find more about next steps on the budget process, and local priorities that are being addressed at ausmamalik.ca/budget2025. There you can also continue to share your feedback as we prepare for the Budget Council meeting on February 11.
